Course Description and Objectives

The purpose of Interpersonal communication 150 is to increase our knowledge and ability in the communication process. The theory and practice of communication will be utilized each day in class as we learn how to more effectively interact with family, friends, colleagues, self, and our Heavenly Father. Because of the nature of the class, the following areas are critical for your experience.

Class Requirements

37.5% Exams- 3 exams in the testing center, consisting of true and false, multiple choice, and matching questions, and short answer.

30% Portfolio- each student will be required to create a portfolio during the semester. To create a proper portfolio students will input all class notes, and quizzes, and portfolio assignments, and papers.  Students will also include a semester journal (Mon. Wed. Fri.) as part of the portfolio. Also included in the portfolio will be a Photo-Op assignment. You will gather Photos of your self and of your interests. You will select 10 photos that explain who you were, are, and want to become. Portfolios are due on  () Late portfolios will not be accepted.

7.5% Building Self/Others/Curriculum- The purpose of this assignment is help students look for ways to improve themselves and others and at the same time build the curriculum of the interpersonal communication class. This project should be one that is directed by the promise and counsel of Presidents Clark and Bednar who have encouraged us to "seek learning even by study, and also by faith" (D&C 109:7).

2.5%In this assignment students will select an area of improvement in there own lives that they will work on during the semester (i.e. Increase my spirituality by reading my scriptures daily, and attending devotional in person each week; improve my health by participating in a n exercise program 4 times a week for 45 minutes and eliminating carbonated beverages on weekdays).

2.5%They also need to choose something they can do the improve interpersonal relationships (i.e. Participating in service organizations on campus, helping out in local schools, charitable or non-profit organizations). Students can also choose to try and improve familial relations as long as they are able to specifically identify what they are doing and how they will "measure" the results.

2.5% Students are also asked to help build the Interpersonal Communication Curriculum by researching and presenting to the class outside information about a chapter in our text book. Outside info should include recommended books, articles, television programs, speeches, documentaries, educational games and activities. Students will present their findings in class and include a handout (PDF) that will be delivered to others in the class that they can include in their portfolio.

10% Chapter Vocabulary Quizzes- students are required to read each chapter by the assigned dates.  Students will take a ten point quiz for each chapter.

10% Attendance/Participation- Because of the nature of the material and the importance of class discussion, students are required to attend each class. Students are allowed 2 (I repeat; two!!!) absences before their grade will be affected. Each absence thereafter will result in a 25% loss of attendance grade.
