SPSS Basics via the SPSS Tutorial

IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO RUN THE TUTORIAL, CLICK HERE

I recommend using part of the Tutorial that comes with SPSS as your introduction to using the software. You can find instructions for running the tutorial on page 3 in the yellow SPSS manual that came with the text. Please follow the instructions you find there. When the tutorial starts up, you will see this window pop up:

You can click on the plus signs to expand topics:

Each of those blue titles is a hyperlink. Clicking on it will bring up the corresponding topic. There’s more in the tutorial than we can use at this point. I suggest going through the following topics IN THIS ORDER:

The “Introduction,” but quit when you get to the part about “labels” and variable values.

“Using the Help System,” but quit when you get to the part about the Statistics Coach.

“Reading Data,” but quit when you get to the part about getting data from spreadsheets.

“Using the Data Editor,” but quit when you get to the part about “labels” and variable values.

“Working with Output,” but quit when you get to the part about “pivot tables.”

“Examining Summary Statistics for Individual Variables,” but quit when you get to the part about “crosstabulation tables.”

“Creating and Editing Charts,” but quit when you get to the part about showing “exact values associated with data elements.”

As you go through the topics, open the sample data files used in the examples and try to do on SPSS what the tutorial is showing you. You probably won’t understand everything (statistically) that the tutorial says, but you should be able to reproduce the results shown in the tutorial window.

When you’ve successfully completed everything listed above, please send me an email. In the “subject” line of your email, please type “Tutorial completed” spelled EXACTLY as I have spelled it, with no other symbols or letters. In the message, please put your name and section number. Thanks.
