SPSS Tutorial Workaround for Internet Explorer 7

This page is for people who haven't been able to get the SPSS tutorial to work. I assume you already tried clicking on the "Help" menu, then on "Tutorial," and that when you did, you got an error message, or the tutorial window didn't even open, or it did open, but there's nothing to click on in it, or something like that. Here's what to do:

  1. Start SPSS if you haven't already and cancel the dialog box that says, "What would you like to do?" (Note: you may see a radio button there for "Start the tutorial." You can try that if you like, but if you can't start the tutorial form the help menu, you very likely will not be able to start it from this dialog box, either.)
  2. Click on the "Help" menu.
  3. Click on "Topics." The "Contents" tab should be active, and the right-hand pane should have the title "Getting Started." If not, click on the "Contents Tab" and then on the little book that says, "Getting Help."
  4. In the right-hand pane of the help window, there is a bullet item for the "Tutorial." The last sentence in the paragraph for that bullet says that you can "click here to start the tutorial. So click on "click here."

The good news is that you will be taken to the first page of the tutorial. The bad new is that you can't get the table of contents page shown on the SPSS Basics web page. The good news is, you still have access to the entire tutorial. The bad news is, you have to click through it, topic by topic, to get to whatever topic you want to read about.

If steps 1 through 4 don't work for you, please email me to let me know. I'll need to know which operating system you're using, which browser you're using (and which version), and which version of SPSS you are using.

Good luck to you!
