Kindles – User Guide
Your cooperation in following guidelines and procedures, as well as providing us with feedback will help us determine if we are able to maintain and/or expand this program.
All borrowers will be required to sign an agreement form prior to checking out the Kindle. These forms will be kept on file for the semester.
1. Turning on and off
To turn on, see Getting Started sheet – for location of power switch. To turn on, slide power switch to right and release. To turn off – slide power switch to right and hold then release and assure the screen goes blank. This is important; if the screen is not blank the Kindle is in sleep mode and will continue to drain battery.
2. Five Way Control Button
This is your navigation control. The 5-way control button moves up and down, left and right, as well as by pressing down to select items. The “Home” button will take you to a list of available titles.
3. Selecting content to read Select “Home” and a list of available titles will be displayed.
Use the 5-way control button to navigate up and down the list. Highlight a title and then press the 5-way control down. The book will open to the page that was last in use. To go to the beginning, select “Menu” and then select Table of Contents.
4. Kindle 2 User’s Guide
There is a guide included on the reader which provides detailed information on how to use the Kindle, to highlight, increase font, etc. Turn the Kindle on and if not at the main page with the list of contents, press Home to see list and select User’s Guide.
5. Adding or Deleting Content
a. Adding new Kindle books. Please do not download purchases without contacting the library. We are not deactivating this feature in order to be able to add content to all the Kindles if someone requests a title be added. If we purchase a title, we can add the title to all three Kindles. If you purchase a title, we will be charged, and then we will delete the title from the reader. If you would like to request a specific title be added, please contact (Brooks Haderlie 496-2362 haderlieb@byui.edu or Shane Cole 496-2348 coles@byui.edu ). Please allow us 24-48 hours during the work week (Monday to Friday) to add content. You will need to activate the wireless connection in order for the book to be added to your device. Once added the book will appear in your list of available titles.
b. Adding audio books. Most Kindle books have an audio feature that allows you to listen to the book. You can also add audio books by downloading the book to your computer. To add the audio file, plug your Kindle into your computer using the USB connector. The USB connector to your computer is found by separating the power plug, which will reveal the USB connector. You can drag or copy the file to the Kindle in the same manner that you use to copy files to other devices and/or network folders.
c. Adding PDFs. To add content, plug your Kindle into your computer using the USB connector. The USB connector to your computer is found by separating the power plug, which will reveal the USB connector. The PDF file needs to be downloaded to your computer, and then transferred to the reader. You can drag or copy the file to the Kindle in the same manner that you use to copy files to other devices and/or network folders. Please delete these files before you return the reader.
d. Deleting content. Please do not delete any existing content that was on the device when it was loaned to you.
4. Wireless connection
The wireless connection has been deactivated. To activate the wireless connection, push the Menu button, which will then present a list of options. The first option is “Turn Wireless On.” Leaving the wireless turned on does drain the battery, so it is recommended that you turn the wireless off when not in use.
6. Returning the Kindle
Kindles circulate for two weeks. We ask that you please return it to the Main Service Desk and make sure it is checked in before you leave. Please be sure that all materials that were included- User Guide, Getting Started, and USB/power cord – are all returned. The power cord must include the power adapter plug. Please recharge the Kindle and then be sure to turn the Kindle off completely so that it is returned fully charged. Please do not return the Kindle through the book-drop.
7. If you have questions about the use of this Kindle, call 496-2355 or please go to the library web page and use the Ask a Question Chat feature to send us a question. We will respond as quickly as possible.
