IMPORTANT: Schedules, assignments, and policies are subject to change, but students will be given advance notification of any changes.


Prior to Leaving on Internship Experience

 

1.   Find an internship opportunity. 

 

You can begin your search at http://www.byui.edu/careerservices/careernavigator/about_career_navigator.htm.

 

Career Navigator is an online tool provided by BYU-Idaho to help find internships as well as employment after graduation.

 

Brother Justin Hodges is the Internship Coordinator for Physical Science & Engineering.He has a large database of internship providers. He also sends announcements about current internship openings to all engineering students via email.Visit with him in AUS 106 first.

 

Do not forget to consult friends and relatives.Many jobs and internships are never advertised, because they are filled through networking.

 

There is a campus web page maintained by the BYU-Idaho Internships & Career Services Office with internship information as well: http://www.byui.edu/careerservices/students/internships/internships.htm.

 

2.   Consult with Bro. Fisher about your proposed internship if you have questions about its suitability.

 

3.   Once you have secured an internship, you will need to fill out paperwork to be registered for ECE 398. You will not be registered or receive credit for your experience until all steps are completed:

 

Go to http://www.byui.edu/careerservices or click on the Students menu button at http://www.byui.edu/ and scroll down to Internships.This will put you at the Career Services Home Page.

 

Click on Career Navigator.If prompted, select for students.

 

Log in with your BYU-Idaho netID and password. If you have not yet completed a profile, that will be your first step. Just follow the instructions when you get there.

 

From the Career Navigator Home Page, click on Internships in the Quick Links menu.(You may also select the Profile tab, then the Internships tab.)Any of your previous internships will show in a list.

 

To complete the approval form for a new internship, select Add New. Fill out the information completely, then click Save. If you do not know all of the information yet, click Save as Draft instead.You will be able to finish it later. 

 

4.   Once you have finished, print the form and take it to Brother Rex Fisher (http://emp.byui.edu/fisherr) for approval and signature. You will three copies: one for your own records, one for Brother Fisher, and one to turn into the BYU-Idaho Internships & Career Services Office.

 

5.   Bring the signed form to the BYU-Idaho Internships & Career Services Office. If you are working full-time during an off-track semester, you will automatically be signed up for ECE 398 at half price. If you are on-track, or sign up yourself, you will pay full price for the course.

 

During Internship Experience

 

1.   Within 48 hours of arriving at your destination, Email Bro Fisher (FisherR@byui.edu) with contact information: (1) apartment address, (2) telephone number(s), and (3) Email address you will be using.

 

2.   After your first week, send Bro. Fisher an Initial Status Report report that lists: (1) initial impressions you have of the company, (2) project(s) you will be doing, (3) your supervisor's name and Email address, and (4) any other noteworthy information you would like to include.

 

3.   About three weeks after sending your Initial Status Report, send Bro. Fisher an Interim Status Report that lists: (1) progress on project(s), (2) important things learned, and (3) how you are generally getting along.  There will be two of these interim status reports.  Send the second Interim Status Report four to six weeks after the first one.

 

One Week Before the End of the Semester

 

1.   Send Bro. Fisher a Final Internship Report that includes: (1) your final impressions of the company where you worked and an explanation of why or why not you would like to work there after graduation, (2) a summary of the project(s) you worked on and what you learned from them, and (3) a copy of the thank you note you sent your supervisor.  The thank you note should point out something you admire about your supervisor his company and one or two things that you learned during your time there.

 

2   Complete the online Internship Experience Self Evaluation at http://www.byui.edu/internshipsNote: Depending on when your internship actually ends, you may have to do this earlier.  The internship office will notify you about the deadline for your particular semester.  The University will not post your grade unless this is completed.

 

After Returning From Internship Experience

 

Send the thank you note to your supervisor.
