Course Purpose

 

The purpose of this course is to give students the tools to learn the free enterprise system in a real working situation.  Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) challenges students on more than 1,300 college and university campuses in more than 33 countries to take what they're learning in the classroom and use their knowledge to better their communities.  Through a collaborative effort between business and education, SIFE Teams improve the quality of life and the standard of living around the world by teaching the principles of market economics, entrepreneurship, business ethics, and personal financial success.

 

 

Objectives

 

Upon completing the entrepreneurship practicum, you should be able to:

 

  • Achieve a solid foundation in core subjects and a thorough understanding of the entrepreneurial enterprise.
  • Commit to continuous professional development and lifelong learning through deeper understanding of life goals, self-management of learning skills, and deeper understanding of the entrepreneurial process.
  • Develop an understanding of the forces of change, such as technology and globalization, to enhance your managerial and decision-making skills.
  • Extend your logical and critical thinking skills, including the capacity to think beyond boundaries and to engage in integrating analysis across disciplines.
  • Strengthen your interpersonal skills, including team participation, team building, and leadership.
  • Increase your commitment to integrity and ethical conduct in personal and professional pursuits.

 

Grading Components

 

1.  ATTENDANCE…………………………………………………………….100 Points

 

Attendance is required.  We will meet every Thursday in Smith 220 at 6:00 PM.  Perfect attendance is worth the full 100 points.

 

2.  SIFE / SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS …………………………….200 Points

 

For this component of your grade, you will be participating or assisting in the implementation of two SIFE / service learning projects.  For more information on SIFE projects, go to http://www.byui.edu/societies/sife or www.sife.org.  SIFE is also proud to issue a Service Leadership Award to students who complete a total of 100 hours of service through participation in SIFE activities.  Being the most prestigious honor a SIFE student can earn, there are many benefits.  Your resume will be submitted into a database for several fortune five hundred companies to see, you will receive a letter of recommendation from the executive committee of the SIFE Board of Directors, a certificate recognizing your accomplishments, and a letter signed by the President of the United States of America. 

At the end of the semester you will also need to submit a one-page paper outlining, which two projects you participated in during the semester and the number of hours spent on SIFE related activities. 

 

3.  PROJECT PRESENTATIONS…………………………………….Misc. 40 Points

 

During the semester there will be various project presentations that will be presented.  You are required to attend at least one of these presentations and write a one page summary on what you leaned and how you benefited from this presentation.   

 

4.  ATTENDANCE AT LEADERSHIP RETREATS AND SOCIALS…..…50 Points

 

You will be responsible for attending at least one of the leadership retreats or socials.

 

Grading Scale:

 

93% - 100% = A

80% - 82.9% = B-

67% - 69% = D+

90% - 92.9% = A-

77% - 79.9% = C+

63% - 66.9% = D

87% - 89.9% = B+

73% - 76.9% = C

60% - 62.9% = D-

83% - 86.9% = B

70% - 72.9% = C-

Below 60.0% = F
