Class Description: Introduction to the medical and allied health careers. There are over 900 different careers in the medical field. This class is a overview of health care system within the United States and descriptions of about 100 of the most popular medical and allied health careers. The class includes readings and activities of 1 to 3 hours each week to help the student gain an insight into the US. Health Care System.
The course is designed to be finished in 13 weeks of study. You cannot work ahead or get behind in these lessons, and exams. Each lesson is only opened for a short period of time as seen in the schedule. You must go on blackboard to complete the lesson, and exams. Each student will also be required to complete an interview with a professional healthcare worker and then turn in the results of the interview in a research paper form. Please carefully review the dates when testing and paper must be completed. The format for that paper is found at the bottom of this syllabus.
Readings: Introduction to the Medical and Allied Health Professions. All textbook materials are access on Blackboard. The assignment are included in the text materials, but you are not required to turn them into the instructor. Go to Blackboard and then to the H. S. 100 class. There is a link there to access the lessons. The exams are available on Blackboard links as well.
Assignments: Please review carefully
1. Complete readings for each chapters You may need additional materials to completely understand the chapter readings, like a medical dictionary or a regular dictionary. Some terms may not be fully explained in the text, but you should know what they mean.
2. Complete open notes open book exam online. You can only access the exam once. There are 13 exams you may see the schedule below. Each of the exams covers materials that is contained in each of the lessons. After completing the exam, you must submit the exam through Blackboard. After completing the exam questions hit the submit link and the exam will be graded automatically and you will see the score for your exams. You may take each exam as many times as you want. Saving features on blackboard may or may not work, so be carefully if you start an exam and then try to finish it at a later date. If the exam freezes, while you are taking it or if you cannot access it, contact the instructor or the help desk to have the exam reset. The exams are not hard but do require exact answers. The exams open on Mondays and close the following Tuesdays after they has been opened. No make up exams will be allowed. The last exam will closes on Friday Dec. 12th, 2008.
3. Prepare at least a three page double spaced typed paper on one of the medical or allied health careers. Your paper should include a personal interview with a health professional. Please use the outline found at the end of this syllabus. You must include additional information about the career not just the information obtained through your interview. It must be delivered or sent in the hard copy, Word or Word Perfect formats only please, to my office in the Clarke Bldg. 145 K and should arrive no later than Dec. 5th, 2008. Late work will not be accepted.
Grading:
1. Exams are each worth 10-15 points or 70% of your grade. The exams are open book and notes, and may be found on blackboard. The materials for the exams comes from the assignment and readings. Please observe all opening and closing dates for these exams. .
2. The paper is worth 50 points or 30% of your grade.( see the outline for this paper at the bottom of this syllabus) The paper must submitted in hard copy to the instructor Office by Dec. 5th, 2008. If you are mailing your paper or assignments, they must arrive by this date.
A = 93% and above C+ = 77.5% - 79.9% D- = 63.4% - 60%
A- = 90% - 92.9% C = 73.5% - 77.4% F = Below 60%
B+ = 87.5% - 89.9% C- = 70% - 73.4%
B = 83.5% - 87.4% D+ = 69.9% - 67.5%
B- = 83.4% - 80% D = 63.5% - 67.4%
B- = 80 % - 83.4%
The teacher reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus and class requirements as necessary.
