The
Newel K. Whitney Store, Kirtland Ohio.
This store belonged to
Newel K. Whitney while living in Kirtland, Ohio. This store was
the first mercantile store in Kirtland. Joseph and Emma moved
into a portion of the upper part of the store in September 1832.
Many sacred events in Church History
occurred in this store. The upper portion of the store became the
Church headquarters for about a year and a half where the councils of
the Church met regularly. It was here that the command to build a
temple was given as well as the First Presidency was organized.
Joseph received 16
(maybe 17) revelations in the store (D&C 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89,
90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 101 and probably 78) including the
prophecy on war (D&C 87), the Olive Leaf in which the command to
organize the school of the prophets and construct a temple (D&C
88), and the Word of Wisdom (D&C 89).
The first session of the
School of the Prophets met in this store in the winter of 1833.
During that session, a vision of the Father and Son were received by
members of the School.
The store served as part of the United
Order (Firm)as well as the first bishop's storehouse.
