The Smith Family Farm
This is an
etching of the Smith Family farm in Palmyra, New York. The Smith
Family moved to New York from Vermont in 1816. By the fall of
1817, the Smith's made an initial payment on the hundred acre piece of
"wild and unimproved" piece of land that would become their farm.
Druing the winter of 1817 and 1818, the Smith's cleared some of the
land and began to build a log house on the northern edge of the
farm. The log house was completed by the fall of 1818 and the
Smith's moved into their own house. Eventually the Smith's built
a frame house in the middle of the farm where they lived from 1825
through 1829.
