Todd Christofferson,  "Come To Zion," Ensign, Nov. 2008.  Write-up:  Produce a one-page, single-spaced, typed write-up that details the answers to what Elder Christofferson taught concerning (1) What Zion is (note scripture references, particularly D&C references; and (2) How Zion is achieved (again note references).  The more detailed the better the grade.
  • Nov. 3   NO ASSIGNMENT.  We need to finish discussion of Kingdom of God (Celestial Kingdom).  Come with scriptures and ready to discuss D&C 76:50-170, 92-95 further.
  • Nov. 5   TOPIC: The Gathering of Scattered Israel   Before doing the Doctrine and Covenants readings, review Jacob 5 (this visual will quickly help your review  The Olive Tree Allegory );  (if you have never studied Jacob you may want to click on Jacob 5-6: The Allegory of the Olive Tree in the Book of Mormon Student Study Guide (2000); or "The Tame and Wild Olive Trees--An Allegory of Our Savior's Love," (Ensign, Aug. 1988).   The following is both the reading and questions to be answered in a write-up-- (1) Read through Jacob 5:61-74  and answer the following:  What were the specific activies of the servants called to the vineyard and what might be the symbolism of these actions?  List the outcomes the Lord of the vineyard wanted to be achieved by the servants (see vss. 61, 66, 71,73, 74).  (2)  Read the following sets of verses D&C 29:1-10; 33:1-11; 37:1-4; and 133:4-14; 138:53-59.  For each set of verses list what is taught about the work of the gathering that is to be accomplished by the Lord's servants.
  • Nov. 10  TOPIC: Zion and the Law of Consecration    D&C 37:1 stated that the saints were to gather "to the Ohio" for two reasons: (1) because of the enemy, (2) and "for your sakes.  At the conference held on Jan. 2, the saints asked for more information about this move.  A revelation recorded in D&C 38 was given.  In this revelation the first principles associated with the law of consecration (i.e., law of Zion or the celestial kingdom) were given.  Read through D&C 38 and complete a write-up that (1) lists the various things that give greater insight into the two reasons the saints were to gather to the Ohio, and (2)  extract from vss. 17-27 various principles that undergird the law of consecration.  (20 pts.)
  • Nov 12  NO CLASS
  • Nov 17  TOPIC: Law of Consecration  D&C 42: The Law.  Read through D&C 42 looking for the various laws that are collectively called "the law".  Write-up in two parts.  Part One: write down the various principles stated with each law: the law of missionary work (5-11), the law of teaching (12-15), murder (18-19, 79), stealing (20, 84-85), lying (21, 86), adultery (22-26, 74-78, 80-83), gossip/slander against neighbor (27), and the economic side of the law of consecration (30-42, 53-55, 70-73), healing of the sick (44-52),  revelation (56-61, 65-69), confession of sin (89-93).  Part Two:  Write a paragraph discussing how the laws stated in section 42 all are related to or work together with the law of consecration.

  •  Nov. 24  TOPIC:  New Jerusalem in the Last Days (Detail to the Sequence of Events)  D&C 45.  Whereas JS Matthew gives the outline of signs of the times (or events/conditions leading up to the second coming), D&C 45 adds greater detail to various signs, particullarly the signs close to his coming.  Read through section 45 and try to match some of the details given in section 45 to the signs they are detailing.  For example 45:24-25, 28-30 give detail to JS Matthew 1:27.
  • Nov 26  NO CLASS
  • Dec 1   TOPIC: Zion-New Jerusalem  In his article, "Quest for the City of God: the Doctrine of Zion in Modern Revelation," Robert L. • Dec  3  TOPIC:  Zion-New Jerusalem.  Finish reading Bro. Millet's article found above.  Do a one page write-up it two parts: [1] explaine Zion as the place of gathering and Zion as the ideal society; [2] having read the article, discuss how has your concept of Zion been expanded.
