Nursing 450 - Nursing Leadership Theory and Clinical Responsibilities

 

Course Description: This course provides Learners with opportunities to learn and understand leadership by analyzing the different aspects of what leaders and manager do within nursing. In Nursing 450 ideas of caring relationships intragraded into the role and responsibilities of nurse management, client relationships and interactions are explored in a way that as a mid-level manager Learners will have a working knowledge of the basic responsibilities of leaders. Learners will gain understanding, skills, strategies, to facilitate professional nursing practice and effectively lead and/or Shepherd individuals and manage human resource functions within health care organizations.

General Objectives and Goals: The first thing that must be apparent to all Leaner’s is that the Course Assignment Sheet listed below (It is also list in the Overview Section of the course syllabi) gives clear direction as to what the Theory Requirements are for this course. The Learner who follows the Course Assignment Sheet will remain focused and will be able to stay on task for completing all of their theory assignments.

 

Clinical: The goals listed below act as general statements which will guide the Learner into and through both theory and clinical responsibilities. They may or may not all be met with a 100 percent completion. The overriding philosophy for the Learner in meeting and/or exceeding the completion of the goals is generated by this concept: That the Learner will and must take their own active role in completing the goals. This does not mean that each Learner will achieve all the goals listed below. What it does mean is that the Learner will play the major role in defining their clinical experience, ie: what they will learn, when they will learn, where they will learn, how much time it takes them to learn, and how they will learn. Thus said, below is a list of general guidelines to assist the Learner in meeting their theory and clinical goals. Roman numeral I, II, and III are the Overriding principles from the BYU-I Nursing Model which help to guide student learning. The goals/objectives are listed under each roman numeral.

 

I          Nursing Agency: Stewardship, laws and opposites, caring relationships, professionalism knowledge, incorporating critical thinking, health continuum, environment, patient agency and the nursing process.

 

            1.         Review nursing administration in relationship to the Learners work environment

            2.         Analyze and discuss the difference between leadership and management.

            3.         Discuss principles of leadership and management.

            4.         Discuss and evaluate the role of strategic planning in defining the direction of health care organizations in today’s dynamic environment, including consideration of allocation of resources and changes in technology.

            5.         Analyze models for managing time and stress which support professional practice. Learners will review their own current methods for managing and adapting to time and stress.

            6.         Analyze and discuss the functions of selection, staffing, training, and performance review as components of the nurse manager’s role, identifying factors which contribute to success in each area.

            7.         Analyze and discuss existing information management systems in health care organizations in terms of client confidentiality, user access (bedside vs. remote terminal access), and legal implications.

            8.         Analyze empowerment within the workforce as a useful leadership tool in developing subordinates and enhancing productivity and morale in the health care work environment.

            9.         Analyze and discuss the cultural environment in a health care institution as it relates to the elements necessary for a shared governance model to function effectively.

            10.       Utilize a quality improvement framework to develop a plan to respond to a quality management situation.

            11.       Analyze the risk potential associated with a variety of nursing activities and develop specific strategies to reduce the risks within these activities.

            12.       Delineate and discuss the organizational characteristics of various health care facilities which includes culture, power, structure, and function.

II.        Patient Agency: Stewardship, laws and opposites, caring relationships, functionality, knowledge incorporating critical thinking, health continuum, environment, nurse agency and the nursing process.

 

            1.         Analyze and Discuss factors for consideration during clinical delegation decision, including all levels of care in the professional practice of nursing.

            2.         Evaluate the elements of an effective program for assuring positive relations with providers and enhancing the organization’s image.

 

III.       Nursing Process: Assessment, Diagnoses, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation as incorporating critical thinking, health continuum and environment.

 

            1.         Evaluate and discuss effectiveness of nursing management in terms of the components of effective management and leadership.

            2.         Analyze and develop strategies to respond to the impact of the educational diversity, to include certifications and licensure, in the workplace on the role of the nurse manger.

 

Clinical Responsibilities: During this course the student will work with Preceptors/Mentors who have leadership responsibilities at their place of employment. If your health care agency has a Education Coordinator/Student Clinical Coordinator the Learner is required to contact this person as early as possible and perhaps as early as one semester before the Education Coordinator/Student Clinical Coordinator can work out a clinical preceptor for the Learner to use. If the Learners agency does not have a Education Coordinator/Student Clinical Coordinator the Learner is required to contact a Preceptor and work out a clinical schedule. It is preferred that the Learner work with leaders who are working within the health care setting, but this is not mandatory. If a current BYU-Idaho Agreement/Contract is not already filled out and on file, agencies must fill out a BYU-Idaho Master Internship Agreement (see below also in Appendix A of syllabus) or the extended general BYU-Idaho Agreement/Contract (obtain from BYU-I Department Chair) and it must be on file PRIOR to the Learner beginning his/her clinical experience. The BYU-Idaho Master Internship Agreement will be coordinated through your theory teacher.

 

Each Learner is required to complete a Leadership Journal as part of their clinical grade (see Appendix A for the required journal, also posted below). Notice on the journal that there is a place for the Preceptors signature. Where the signature area is shaded a signature is not required. There is additional space provided for the Learner to journal entry and to document your journal work. When this clinical Journal is completed your clinical requirements for this course is met. The completed journal will be handed in after the last clinical day so grades can be calculated. The journal is worth 160 points. Your Preceptor will fill out (one) Preceptor Clinical Evaluations on the Learner (see Appendix D and also listed below). The Preceptor Evaluation is worth 18 points.
