Chapter 4: Newspapers
Overview: Among all of the print media, newspapers face the most uncertain future. Challenged by new competitors and new technologies, this proud, long-dominant medium finds itself steadily losing readers. Newspapers must somehow find a better way to connect with contemporary audiences or integrate some of these new technologies into their own product. If they don't, newspapers are bound for a greatly lessened role in the media mix of tomorrow.
Objective: Generate ideas through group discussion concerning ways that newspapers can remain a strong mass medium despite the competitive and technological pressures facing them.
Directions:
- Read Chapter 4 of the Vivian text, pages 78-107, before starting this project.
- Follow the navigation instructions through the following pages that describe and illustrate the current situation for newspapers.
- Read the articles hyperlinked to various Internet sites for additional background.
- After evaluating all of this information, decide which of the three on-line discussion groups you wish to take part in. You must post an original entry of at least 200 words, respond to at least four other students' postings, and maintain the discussion threads with those who respond to you. (Please note that there will be a limit of 12 students per group -- those "later comers" may end up being assigned to a group if numbers end up being uneven.)
