Geology 111 - Introduction to Physical Geology
Geology 350 - Mineralogy & Petrology
Geology 420 - Geochemistry
Research Interests:
Igneous Petrogenesis
I am studying the Eocene Volcanics in the Centennial and Henrys Mountains of Eastern Idaho to understand their petrogenesis and to illuminate that nature of magmatism between the Challis and Absaroka volcanic fields during the Eocene.
I am also studying the Miocene to present Volcanics in the Eastern Snake River Plain to understand the petrogenesis of individual volcanic centers and their relationship to the petrogenesis of the Yellowstone Snake River Provice.
Experimental Geochemistry
I am studying the point defect concentrations of geologic materials in an effort to understand their link to petrogenetic variables. Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy and other analytical techniques are used to identify the point defect characteristics. Cold-seal hydrothermal experiments are used to understand the link between point defect concentrations and petrogenetic parameters.
Logical Structure / Philosophy of Geology
I am exploring the logical structure of geology in an effort to understand its philosophical foundations.
Education and Experience:
Chairman, Department of Geology, BYU-Idaho, 2007 - present
Professor of Geology, BYU-Idaho, 2001 - present
Assistant to the Executive Director, American Geophysical Union, 1997 - 2001
Ph.D, 1997, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Geology
Doctoral thesis: O-diffusion in Rutile from 750 to 1000 °C and 0.1 to 1000 MPa. Measured O diffusion rates in rutile under geologic conditions and applied the data to metamorphic environments using finite difference modeling.
M.Sc., 1993, Brigham Young University, Geology
Master's thesis: Oligocene East Tintic Volcanic Field, Utah: Geology and Petrogenesis. Developed a petrogenetic model and magmatic history for magmas associated with an Oligocene composite volcanic complex. This project involved geologic mapping of a complex igneous terrain, laboratory petrography, x-ray fluorescence analysis, and petrogenetic modeling.
