Virtual Fingers
Virtual Fingers takes a score (song) stored as a standard MIDI file and allows anyone to play back the song, as it is written, while controlling its timing, tempo, and dynamics. Any user can easily control playback of the score by selecting one of six progressive playback methods matching their skill level. The simplest method of playback is to tap the beat of the song. After selecting the score to be played, the user taps the keyboard to the beat like a conductor:
The song is played back as written in the score and while allowing real-time parameters, such as synchronization, tempo, and dynamics to be completely controlled by the user. This enables people without any training to immediately produce quality accompaniment-even for congregational singing!
  • If the user stops tapping, the score will wait until another tap is given.
  • If the user taps faster the song is played faster in perfect synchronization and tempo.
  • If the user taps harder, the song is played more loudly.
  • Fermatas can be achieved by holding down the tap key or the sustain pedal.
The other playback modes accept increasingly advanced keyboarding as input from the user. Rather than tapping the beat or simply listening to the song without any input, the user can select to tap the rhythm of the song, to play a single part in the song, to play only the right hand, or to play only the left hand. Virtual Fingers monitors the keys pressed by
the user and plays all the notes in the score that the user doesn't play.
All of these playback modes provide the same responsiveness and dynamics as does tapping the beat. Thus, the user plays at his/her skill level and Virtual Fingers does what is necessary to produce full and beautiful music.
Simply selecting a song and pressing a playback button may meet the needs of some users. However, full control of the playback options is readily accessible through pull down menus. Virtual Fingers is simple to use and powerful. Ample options allow the user to:
  • Mute parts
  • Start playback in the middle of the song
  • Transpose the score
  • Save settings for multiple users
  • In addition, users can record a song (with or without metronome) and then use Virtual Fingers to playback the recording.
  • And more!
