European/Asian Design Influence
Hort 336 & 337
Final Assignment
This is the assignment: Prepare a document that analyzes the contrast between the influence of Asian design and European design in modern floristry and landscape design. I addition, explain how these cultures have relied on and influenced families over the ages. Conclude with your feelings about family, how these cultures will influence your design ideas, and your own future family.

Now, in order to deeply study the influence of Asian art on European thinking, and on our more modern Western culture, please study the following links:

I know it is wikipedia, but it does have a very detailed explanation of japonisme

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japonism

Here is another perspective on japonisme

http://www.artelino.com/articles/van_gogh_japonisme.asp

and here is an artist's perspective on VanGogh's work influenced by Japanese art.

Please read this article:

Next, please study the following designers via their web pages:

http://www.life3.net/

http://www.gregorlersch.de/ (not much English, but look at some of the design ideas)

http://www.renevanrems.com/

http://www.damienkoh.com/

http://design358.com/ This is Hitomi Gilliam's new site. It links to some real trend-setters in the floral industry.

Now, from the following list of movies, please select at least two to view during the next three weeks. (If you have watched the movie before, try to find a new one to broaden your view on the subject) The intent of this portion of the assignment is to gain a pretty good idea of how the social rules were taught and followed, how family unity and purpose can strengthen people, while in contrast, those who disregard family values can suffer ignominiously.

The Age of Innocence (a martin scorsese film about the late victorian era and the social interactions of the wealthy families in the US, with a little European twist. There is a section of the movie that suggests some reference to immoral behaviour and passion, but family comes to the rescue--just wanted to warn you)

Sense and Sensibility Pay particular attention to human nature as the eldest son is so heavily influenced by his wife as he attemps (emphasis on attempts) to carry out his father's wishes, and how other family members rise to the needs of the situation.

Pride and Prejudice The newer version with Keira Kneightly, Donald Sutherland, Mathew Macfadyen, etc. is shorter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride_%26_Prejudice_(2005_film). If you have the time, the longer version with Colin Firth, is unsurpassed as well

Wives and Daughters http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/wives/index.html

Emma ( I know most of you like the Gwyneth Paltrow version, but try to find the 2009 version from BBC with Romola Garai, as Emma. This version is much less hollywood and more accurate.) http://www.squidoo.com/emma-movie http://www.squidoo.com/emma-2009

Daniel Deronda http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/deronda/index.html

Please view this link about the Japanese family: http://afe.easia.columbia.edu/at_japan_soc/common/all.htm#family

This is a transcript from some video clips. I could not get the clips to work, but the transcript information is very helpful about Japanese culture.

Now, finally, we have spent many sessions watching, discussing, sharing ideas and findings. Please ponder how these cultures have influenced society, families, and your life; ponder about how you see your future, and the future of the industry influenced by them. Try to concentrate down to three or four pages of writing about your ponderings. You can write more, but the end result is to provide you with a distilled, articulate description of how these two cultures have particularly combined to influence our lives, art, and culture.

in short: Prepare a document that analyzes the contrast between the influence of Asian design and European design in modern floristry and landscape design. I addition, explain how these cultures have relied on and influenced families over the ages. Conclude with your feelings about family, how these cultures will influence your design ideas, and your own future family.

Please have someone read through your paper before you send it to me. Have them check it for grammar, correct spelling, etc., and give you an opinion of how well you have explained these cultural influences. When you are satisfied, please turn it in to the drop box in Brain Honey®

I look forward to your insights.
