The Second Estate

Introduction to Second Estate:

REWORKING THIS AREA

The Book of Abraham speaks of a "first estate" and "second estate" (see Abr. 3:26). Because the first estate has reference to the premortal existence of mankind, the second estate is often thought of as man's mortal existence. There is no question that the mortal experience is a major aspect of the second estate.  The mortal existence is associated with time. We read in the Book of Mormon that
this life as "a probationary state; a time to prepare to meet God; a time to prepare for that endless state which has been spoken of by us, which is after the resurrection of the dead" (Alma 12:24; see also Mosiah 16:9, 11; Alma 41:4, 7; Mormon 9:13; emphasis added). Though the phrase "third estate" does not appear in the scriptures, it seems appropriate to refer to that "endless state . . . which is after the resurrection of the dead" as the third estate.

This seems to accord with Abraham 3:26: "they who keep their first estate shall be added upon; and they who keep not their first estate shall not have glory in the same kingdom with those who keep their first estate; and they who keep their second estate shall have glory added upon their heads for ever and ever."

The Second Estate is often thought of as man's mortal existence on this temporal earth. But the scriptures enlarge our understanding of the second estate to include life in the post mortal spirit world, and existence in the Millennium. Consider the following.

First, the scriptures speak of  Thus, the third estate, the "endless" state, is after man has been resurrected and brought to stand before God in final judgment. Our fate in the "endless state" will have already been determined by the laws and desires we have chosen to abide by (see Alma 41:3-5; D&C 137:9; 2 Cor. 5:10). Then God issue His "final and irrevocable decrees . . . as pertaining to every living soul" (The Millennial Messiah [1982], 515).    Our Then, depending upon the law of the "kingdom"--celestial, terrestrial, or telestial--they have both desired and obeyed, they will then dwell endlessly in that state of existence (sere D&C 76:50-112; 88:20-24, 28-31).
